New Screen Issue

The new version 3.1.1 to fix a Screen Issue means I am now stuck with Split Screen only. I do not always want all the menu clutter on the left side of my screen.

My ability to choose has been taken away, and I can no longer close the split. How is this a fix, or an improvement?
